Mac external Hard drives | Photographers |

Mac users who need a compatible external hard drive. Personally I have been using Western Digital for the past 5 or so years. I love them. Costco sometimes has good deals on them. I always have 2 backups of all my pictures. 2 copies. I also have my iMac hooked up to a external 2 TB hard drive of ONLY my computer nothing else, set it up as the time machine. Thank God because my 6 month old iMac just had the hard drive break and thankfully I was able to just plug it in and whole computer was all there safe!!!

I asked on Facebook a while back and got some great answers.

Here is what others said that are good and things to remember:

1. Western Digital- I have 4 of these.

2. High density drive (over 1TB) get one with a fan in the enclosure. My 2TB drives get so hot, even uncovered, that I cannot hold my hand on them.

3. Every hard drive will fail someday. Always keep that in mind. Anything you only have one copy of (or copies in only one place) aren’t really safe.

4. Time capsule

5. Drobo FS {these I think are the best ones }

6. Fantom GreenDrive

Online backup companies: Backblaze.com

Popoplug: I haven’t used either online before. I used another called

Jungledisk.com : I did use last year, it was good. Thankfully I never had retrieve anything.

Smugmug.com isn’t expensive and you can use unlimited storage. I do use this but not as a backup.

Bad

Seagate- fails for too many people I have heard. I would stay away from it.
